So, for the fourth time this year (yes, you read that correctly!), we have a new Housing Minister. The Rt Hon Simon Clarke MP Clarke, who has been appointed Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, in the formation of the new cabinet under Liz Truss' leadership. Previously Greg Clark held the post for just two months after Michael Gove was sacked.
Clarke was Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 15 September 2021 to 6 September 2022. Though he thankfully does seem to have some housing track record, for a short period at least, as the previous Minister of Housing, Communities and Local Government, appointed back in February 2020.
Shortly following his appointment as Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, Clarke tweeted:
“Delivering on Levelling Up for communities in all parts of our country, unlocking the homes we need and supporting the economic growth that is so central to @trussliz’s Government is our mission – will give it my all.
“This is a Department that I know really well, and which I am so looking forward to returning to – the commitment and expertise of officials there on themes as diverse as homelessness, building safety and devolution is second to none.”
Not sure how well he knows this department, after only previously being in post for just 18 months. This role has a long history of incredibly regular change, but no doubt time will tell.
