The prime minister with the longest single term was Robert Walpole, lasting 20 years and 315 days from 3 April 1721 until 11 February 1742. This is also longer than the accumulated terms of any other prime minister.

As of October 2022, Liz Truss is the shortest-serving prime minister after announcing her plans to resign 45 days into her tenure amidst the October 2022 United Kingdom government crisis. The previous shortest time served was George Canning, who served for less than four months before his death.
